Hong Kong Baptist University announced today the appointment of Professor Zhang Jianhua as Dean of the Faculty of Science with effect from 1 August 2017.
Professor Zhang is currently Professor of Plant Biology at School of Life Sciences, and Director of State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Prior to joining CUHK in 2012, he was Head of the Department of Biology of HKBU.
An internationally renowned scholar and an expert in the areas of plant stress physiology and water-saving cultivation of field crops, Professor Zhang was selected by prestigious scientific journal Nature as one of the “five crop researchers who could change the world” in December 2008 for his research focusing primarily on areas in northern China which has helped farmers save up to 30 percent of irrigated water while maintaining the same crop yield.
Professor Zhang’s achievements have been widely recognised through a number of awards including the State Natural Science Award and the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the State Council, China as well as the Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education, China. Professor Zhang also has a remarkable publication record, with over 10,000 SCI citations and a score of 54 for publication performance metric h-index.
Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, welcomed the appointment. He said: “Professor Zhang is a prominent scholar with excellent research achievements and academic leadership. We are confident that under his guidance, the Faculty of Science will scale new heights and continue to deliver quality teaching, research and community service to nurture young scientists and professionals.”
Professor Zhang obtained his BSc from Jiangsu Agricultural College in China and his PhD from Lancaster University in the UK. He was also awarded with Doctor of Science (honoris causa) by Lancaster University in 2014.
