On 16 January 2017, an informal gathering entitled “meet with Prof. J. Michael Kosterlitz, 2016 Nobel laureate in Physics” was successfully jointly organized by RPg student representatives, Department of Physics and Faculty of Science.
Prof. Kosterlitz received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Cambridge University (UK) and Ph.D. degree from Oxford University (UK) in 1969. He served at the University of Birmingham (UK) before joining Brown University (USA) in 1982. He is currently a Professor in Department of Physics at Brown University.
Miss Liang Yuqi (Kiki) and Mr. Ho Hoi Yi (Carr), current and former RPg student representatives of Physics, were the persons-in-charge of the activity. Prof. Jiming Liu, Associate Dean of Science and Prof. Tang Leihan, Department of Physics were the moderators of the event. Over fifty science students and staff members participated in the event. During the gathering, Prof. Kosterlitz introduced his meaningful research topic and shared his insights on how to strive for excellence in scientific research. Students and staff members took the precious opportunities to raise their questions and had a dynamic dialogue with the Nobel Laureate.
In the end, Prof. Liu and Prof. Tang presented a Faculty souvenir to Prof. Kosterlitz. Students and staffs took photos with Nobel Laureate and Nobel Medal. Students understood more about the Nobel Prize and got acquaintance with each other and faculty members from different departments across the Faculty through the activity.
