Young Scientist Challenge Cup sharpens students' inter-disciplinary knowledge

The Faculty of Science organized the "Young Scientist Challenge Cup 2015-16" on 7 January 2016. The competition was sponsored by the HKBU Century Club and the Faculty of Science. This year, Miss Agnes Wong, Patron and Vice-President of HKBU Century Club, has attended the event to show her support to the participants.

Undergraduate students who participated in the competition this year were challenged to solve a scientific problem entitled "Beyond Science: How to scientifically realize ideas in scientific fictions?". Students from different programmes formed into teams of three to five members to identify a scientific novel type of idea that would likely be realized in the future and its potential applications to a panel of judges. Participants' scientific merit, novel approach and presentation skills were assessed.

The champion was awarded to Miss Ha Tin Yan, Miss Ko Chung Nga, Mr Liu Zhengzhi and Miss Pang Hiu Kwan (Chemistry, Year 4). The first runner-up prize was presented to Miss Chan Hoi Man, Miss Chan Ka Man, Miss Law Ka Ting, Miss Ng Wing Tung and Miss Yan Hau Yu (Chemistry, Year 3). The second runner-up prize went to Miss Chan Kit Yee, Miss Chan Yiu Shuen Haze, Mr Hui Cho Shing, Mr Leung Ming Lok and Miss Li Tak Yee (Biology, Year 3). Among the winning students, Mr Liu Zhengzhi won the individual best presentation award.

The competition, launched this year for the fifth time, aimed to encourage students to put into practice their inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary science and technology knowledge, nurture their leadership and organisation skills, strengthen team spirit and problem-solving abilities, enhance communication and presentation skills, and inspire creativity.
