Two HKBU spin-off companies, OPER Technology Limited and ANA Artwork Material Analysis Limited, recently won four technology start-ups awards. OPER Technology Limited won The Red Herring Top 100 Global Award in recognition of their innovation and cutting-edge technology. The 100 winning companies were selected from among hundreds of leading technology start-ups across their respective industries in North America, Europe and Asia.
In addition, the Company received the Gold Prize in the Technology Start-up Award under the Fifth Bank of China (HK) FITMI Achievement Award organised by Hong Kong Federation of Innovative Technologies and Manufacturing Industries Ltd (FITMI) and Bank of China (Hong Kong). It also received the Certificate of Merit (Technological Achievement category) in the Hong Kong Awards for Industries organised by Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation recently. Meanwhile, ANA Artwork Material Analysis Limited which invented a patented laser technology for artwork and antique authentication, received the Outstanding Certificate in the FITMI Achievement Award.
The judging panel for The Red Herring Top 100 Global Award commended OPER Technology Limited for “embodying the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture”. Dr Cathy Lui, CEO of OPER Technology Limited and HKBU Research Associate, was delighted that her company received this honour. She quoted one of the judges who said that her company offers a promising technology which can contribute to the betterment of mankind.
OPER Technology Limited was named 2015 Red Herring Top 100 Asia earlier this year. The finalists of the Top 100 Asia, the Top 100 North America and the Top 100 Europe then competed for a spot on the top 100 global award list. OPER Technology Limited was set up in November 2014 by Dr Cathy Lui, HKBU alumna who is concurrently HKBU Research Associate and CEO of the Company, and Professor Ken Yung, Associate Head and Professor of the Department of Biology of HKBU and Chairman of the Company. The Company is a pioneer in a new technology which could in future be used to treat neurological problems such as Parkinson’s disease in humans.
ANA Artwork Material Analysis Limited was set up in October 2014 by Dr Bruno Cai, HKBU alumnus and President & Co-founder of the Company, and Professor Cheung Nai-ho of the Department of Physics of HKBU and Chief Technology Advisor of the Company.
Both technology start-ups aim to commercialise their findings from research conducted at HKBU using the fund granted by the Government’s Innovation and Technology Commission under the 2014-15 Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities.
