Young Scientist Challenge Cup sharpens students' inter-disciplinary knowledge


The Faculty of Science organized the "Young Scientist Challenge Cup 2014-15" on 8 January 2015. The competition was sponsored by the HKBU Century Club and the Faculty of Science. This year, Ms Esther Wong, Patron and Director of HKBU Century Club, has attended the event to show her support to the participants.

Undergraduate students who participated in the competition this year were challenged to solve a scientific problem entitled "Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance". Students from different programmes formed into teams of three to five members to present their innovative methods and strategies to prevent the rise of resistance to antibiotics to a panel of judges. Participants' scientific merit, novel approach and presentation skills were assessed.

The champion was awarded to Miss Chan Wing Lam, Mr Wong Ho Fung (Biology, Year 2), Mr Ng Yat Kwong (Biology, Year 3), Miss Law Chiu Yee (Chemistry, Year 2) and Miss Chung Ka Wai (Chemistry, Year 3). The first runner-up prize was presented to Mr Cheng Ka Lok, Mr Chiang Yiu Chun, Mr Chung Yan Lung (Biology, Year 3) and Miss Fu Danyang (Chemistry, Year 3). The second runner-up prize went to Miss Tung Man Ling (Chemistry, Year 2), Mr Lai Kin Man and Miss Tang Ka Yin (Chemistry, Year 3). Among the winning students, Mr Wong Ho Fung won the individual best presentation award.

The competition, launched this year for the fourth time, aimed to encourage students to put into practice their inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary science and technology knowledge, nurture their leadership and organisation skills, strengthen team spirit and problem-solving abilities, enhance communication and presentation skills, and inspire creativity.
