The Faculty of Science organized the "Young Scientist Challenge Cup 2013-14" on 9 January 2014. This year, the competition challenged undergraduate students to solve a problem entitled "Improving the Quality of Life of the Minority Groups through Science and Technology". Students from different programmes formed into teams of three to five members to present an integrated solution for an invention to improve the quality of life of minority groups such as the blind and the elderly to a panel of judges. Participants' scientific merit, novel approach and presentation skills were assessed.
The competition was sponsored by the HKBU Century Club and Faculty of Science. It aimed to encourage students to put into practice their inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary science and technology knowledge, nurture their leadership and organisation skills, strengthen team spirit and problem-solving abilities, enhance communication and presentation skills, and inspire creativity.
The champion was awarded to Mr Lai Kin Man (Chemistry, Year 2), Miss Tang Ka Yin and Miss Zhang Fangfei (Chemistry, Year 3). The first runner-up prize was presented to Miss Xu Fangfei, Mr Liu Bowen (Mathematics, Year 2), Miss Yang Min (Chemistry, Year 2) and Mr Zhang Yuxiang (Biology, Year 2).
