Welcome Gathering Kicked Off Research Postgraduate Students’ Study Journey


More than sixty students and staff members participated in the welcome gathering for research postgraduate students

The Faculty of Science successfully organized a welcome gathering for research postgraduate (RPg) students, including existing and new students, on September 19, 2018. The event aimed to reinforce exchange and relationship of RPg students as well as foster their sense of belonging to the Faculty. More than sixty students and staff members, including students from India, Indonesia, Mainland China and Hong Kong, participated in the gathering.

Professor Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research and Development) and Professor Jianhua Zhang, Dean of Science, shared their research insights with students during the opening remarks. After the opening remarks, useful information on resources, facilities and activities provided by the Faculty and the University were shared with the students.

Following the introduction of RPg student representatives, five invited speakers shared with participants their valuable research experience from different perspectives. Miss Yeung Yip Hung (MPhil, Year 2, Biology), Mr Wang Qiang (PhD, Year 4, Computer Science) and Mr Huang Zi Jian (PhD, Year 2, Mathematics) illustrated the balance of three central elements in RPG study, i.e., coursework, research and healthy lifestyle, whereas Miss Li Xiaojing (PhD, Year 3, Physics) shared her oversea experience on Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. Dr Kim Pan-Jun (Assistant Professor, Biology) introduced the importance of collaboration in research and the way to work it out. The gathering was ended by lunch reception, during which students and staff members had a fabulous time of mingling.
