Science research postgraduate (RPg) alumni sharing talk has always been an important event for RPg students learning about academic and career prospects. The RPg student representatives gratefully invited Dr Ma Jinhua, COMP alumnus who currently works as an Associate Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), as well as Mr Mai Guangcan, COMP PhD student, as this year’s speakers. Dr Ma’s sharing on his career choice gave precious insights into RPg students’ career planning, whereas Mr Mai’s experience in Michigan State University (MSU) inspired students to consider overseas attachment.
On May 8, 2018, as the first speaker of the event, Dr Ma generously shared his own experience on career choice. Starting with his consideration of personality and interest in his initial stage of career planning, he then gave an overview of academic positions in China and overseas. Apart from career planning, he also mentioned several valuable tips to succeed in PhD study, including independent thinking, clear presentation and time management. Furthermore, he shared his understanding on publication, and encouraged students to aim at top-tier journals.
At the second part of the talk, Mr Mai discussed with students about application and arrangement for overseas attachment. While students may concern about financing the trip, he pointed out some possible financial support, which includes RPg expenses and travel allowance from Graduate School, Departmental support and external scholarships. During his stay at MSU, he learnt how to collaborate with other researchers, and knew different research approaches and topics of overseas researchers.
The talk ended with presentation of souvenirs to speakers and certificates to student representatives. Click here for photos of this event.
